Indiana Innovation Institute names new President and CEO
Stephen Kelly, president and CEO, Indiana Innovation Institute (IN3)

INDIANAPOLIS (July 17, 2019) – The Indiana Innovation Institute (IN3), an applied research institute, has named Stephen Kelly as its new president and CEO, after a nationwide search. Kelly succeeds General Gene Renuart, USAF (Ret.), who has served as chairman and CEO since 2017. Renuart will remain as the chairman of the IN3 Board of Directors.

Most recently, Kelly served as a principal for Sugar River Technology Associates in Burlington, Vt. He spent more than 25 years in various roles at Battelle, a research and development organization in Columbus, Ohio. While at Battelle, he served as corporate vice president and president of Battelle Contract Research, where he oversaw engineering, science and support facilities serving national security, health, infrastructure, energy and environmental markets. He also served as senior vice president and general manager of Battelle’s National Security Division.

“Steve brings a breadth of experience to IN3 that will continue to advance our mission to bring together the best minds from government, academia and industry to solve tough technical challenges for the U.S. Department of Defense and industry and to provide support to Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division,” Renuart said. “His 12 years of service to our country as a U.S. Army Chemical Officer and U.S. Army Reserve Officer, and his experience at Battelle, is a valuable combination to help achieve many of IN3’s goals.”

During his time leading the Battelle Contract Research organization, Kelly achieved six percent annual revenue growth while restructuring the organization to focus on growth areas, including internet-of-things (IoT), cyber security, health services and technologies. He is also responsible for capturing a 30-year, $1 billion-dollar major research facility program called NEON (the National Ecological Observatory Network) funded by the National Science Foundation. NEON is a portal that allows the research community to work together to solve environmental challenges.

“I’ve worked in the defense, national security and technology communities my entire career, and in IN3 I see an organization that can catalyze change and progress in new, unique ways, building on an already strong foundation,” Kelly said. “Indiana has a number of key components for success, an already active and committed leadership in academia, industry and government working to build a new R&D model and great partner institutions with international reputations and the experience in developing innovative, disruptive technologies for the national security community.”

Kelly holds a Bachelor of Science in Life Sciences from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Kelly will begin his role on July 29, 2019. He and his family plan to move to Indiana.
