INDIANAPOLIS (Oct. 2, 2018) ─ The Indiana Innovation Institute (IN3), an applied research institute that brings together top leaders from government, military, industry and research universities in collaboration with Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division (NSWC Crane), is today opening a new collaboration space in the WestGate@Crane Technology Park in Odon, Ind. IN3 is also announcing its new consortium to help solve the most challenging technical problems in microelectronics, hypersonics and electronic warfare for the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and industry.
The collaboration space at the WestGate Academy Conferencing and Training Center includes more than 1,000 square feet of office and conference rooms with an additional 8,000 square feet of warehouse space that is being considered for a possible maker space.
“We want to provide a space where engineers at Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division (NSWC Crane) and other businesses and organizations can collaborate on projects to specifically benefit the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and industry,” said General Gene Renuart, USAF (Ret.), chairman and CEO, Indiana Innovation Institute (IN3). “Ideas to solve some of our toughest military and industry challenges come from collaboration, whether it’s small companies, academic institutions or large military installations, we all benefit from working together.”

“The WestGate Authority is extremely pleased to welcome the Indiana Innovation Institute (IN3) to WestGate,” John Mensch, president, WestGate Authority said. “IN3’s presence in the WestGate@Crane Tech Park means additional diversification of WestGate as it adds to the 40 tenants already in the park. IN3 will certainly bring increased collaboration between these numerous tenants, NSWC Crane, and academia such as Purdue University, Indiana University and other great universities already holding a presence in WestGate.”
WestGate’s primary mission is to support NSWC Crane and its vital mission of supporting the nation’s warfighters. “IN3 will certainly add strength to WestGate and Crane’s mission to support the warfighters,” added Mensch.
IN3 launches the Indiana Consortium for Advanced Technology Transition (INCATT)
IN3 is also launching the INdiana Consortium for Advanced Technology Transition (INCATT), which includes all entities that have the capability to solve difficult technical problems in microelectronics, hypersonics, electronic warfare and other advanced technologies. The consortium consists of large and small businesses, academic institutions, non-profit organizations and non-traditional organizations, such as those not currently doing business with the DoD.
Technical areas of focus for INCATT include:
- The reliability and security of the national semiconductor supply chain.
- The development of hypersonic weapons and defensive systems to counter these weapons.
- The ongoing battle for superiority in the electromagnetic spectrum.
“We bring together expert teams from government, industry and the DoD and combine them with world class talent from our top research universities like Purdue University, Indiana University and the University of Notre Dame,” General Renuart said. “Working with such talent from a variety of places across Indiana creates an optimal environment for driving innovation and economic development statewide.”
INCATT provides businesses and organizations with the following:
- A deep network of collaborators, and a platform to showcase a company or organization’s latest solutions.
- Access to current and relevant defense requirements and technology, and procurement and policy issues.
- A feedback loop to highlight new opportunities to maximize the defense potential of a company or organization.
Both the collaboration space and the creation of INCATT are meant to bolster economic development across Indiana but specifically in the Indiana Uplands region.
